*Jasprit Bumrah in focused practice at the Edgbaston nets.*
Birmingham (TimesofIndia.com): From the moment he entered the Edgbaston Cricket Ground nets, Jasprit Bumrah exuded focus. After a brief walk, he immediately began his routine, culminating in a powerful bowling session at the central net.
Following a gentle warm-up, Bumrah gradually increased his pace, showcasing his readiness for an intense spell. Markers were used to measure his run-up for a 20-minute burst at full speed. With several key batsmen taking a break, Bumrah bowled to players like Sai Sudharsan, Ravindra Jadeja, and Karun Nair.
He challenged the batsmen with accuracy and varied his angles, bowling around the wicket to left-handers and utilizing the crease width for right-handers. His mental freshness was evident, the three-day break seemingly rejuvenating the 31-year-old, who bowled alongside Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.
The trio, having played in the Headingley Test, focused on purposeful training during their second day in Birmingham, following a lighter first practice. Each bowler spent about thirty minutes bowling before practicing their batting.
Siraj worked on defensive techniques with batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, while Bumrah sampled various aspects of training, from side-arm deliveries to slow bowling and throwdowns. He remained intensely focused, engaging in shadow practice while awaiting his turn to bat. Despite a shaky start, the right-hander gained confidence and looked assured by the end of the day.
In adjacent nets, Ravindra Jadeja continued his batting practice, while Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep impressed. Kuldeep Yadav diligently worked on both his batting and bowling. While Akash's or Arshdeep's inclusion depends on Bumrah's availability, Kuldeep is leaving no area of preparation untouched.
The left-arm wrist-spinner actively sought feedback from support staff and teammates. He experimented with angles and lengths, and the dry Birmingham weather may favor his selection for the second Test next week. He appears to be in peak physical condition, with his bowling rhythm evident since the pre-match sessions in Leeds. He engaged in a compelling contest with Gill before the first Test and continues to enjoy these battles in Birmingham.
Kuldeep has dedicated significant time to improving his batting skills under the guidance of head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. Over the past 18 months, he has worked diligently to refine his batting and aims to make meaningful contributions with the bat.
After two days of training, the team will take a break before regrouping on June 30. The bowlers can rest, while bowling coach Morne Morkel can continue his lighthearted wrestling with Arshdeep and Akash Deep. As for Bumrah, his situation remains uncertain for the next 48 hours.
