Rishabh Pant is not just playing cricket; he's revolutionizing it. That's the assessment of former India coach Greg Chappell, who believes the dynamic wicketkeeper-batter is redefining the sport with his unconventional and fearless approach.
Chappell emphasized Pant's match-winning capabilities, noting his near success in altering the course of the Headingley Test. Despite India's loss, Pant's centuries in both innings underscored his transformative impact on the game. This rare achievement cemented his status as a player capable of single-handedly shifting the momentum.
"The beauty of it is that he gets his runs at a very fast rate, which gives you time to win cricket matches," Chappell stated. He lauded Pant's phenomenal performance, remarking that some of his shots seemed to defy traditional coaching manuals. "He is reinventing the game as a batsman," Chappell added, showering praise on the Indian wicketkeeper.
Pant achieved a historic milestone by becoming only the second wicketkeeper-batter, following Andy Flower, to score a century in each innings of a Test match.
Chappell acknowledged the influence of modern technology and advancements in bat design, enabling shots previously deemed impossible. However, he stressed that Pant's exciting and unpredictable style keeps the opposition constantly on edge. Whether charging down the wicket to fast bowlers or executing the falling ramp shot, Pant's unconventional approach leaves everyone guessing.
Drawing comparisons to another iconic wicketkeeper, Adam Gilchrist, Chappell highlighted the value of having a wicketkeeper who can contribute significantly with the bat and score runs rapidly.
"What an exciting cricketer, what a player to have on your team," Chappell said. "When I first saw him, he was a different sort of player, of course, but he reminded me very much of Adam Gilchrist. You know the difference that it can make to a team to have a wicketkeeper that can bat at that level and score runs quickly."
Shubman Gill's Captaincy Debut
Chappell also commented on Shubman Gill's debut as captain, acknowledging that while the result was not in India's favor, there were numerous positives to take away. He believes Gill will only improve with experience. "It was a terrific Test match. Sadly, India didn't finish up on the correct side, but there were a lot of good things that they did. Shubman Gill had a great start to his career as a Test match captain."
He added, "So he will have learned a lot from that... He will only get better and better as a captain... but I think he made a very good start as captain."
