As the daughter of Sun Group chairman Kalanithi Maran, Kavya Maran first garnered significant attention during the 2023 IPL auction, where she spearheaded SRH's strategic player acquisitions. Since then, her presence at SRH games has become a familiar sight, with her reactions to the on-field action quickly going viral across social media platforms.
Maran explained, "Those are my raw emotions that you're seeing because my job has brought me to the point that I have to put myself out there... But even when I go to Ahmedabad or Chennai... the cameraman manages to find me. So, I understand how it becomes memes."
She further added, "When it comes to Sunrisers, I genuinely wear my heart on my sleeve. I think when you put your heart and soul into something, you naturally tend to get very personally attached to its successes and failures."
Under Maran's stewardship, SRH has seen a mix of fortunes in the IPL. The team's performance has fluctuated considerably from season to season.
After finishing at the bottom of the league table in 2023, despite having a strong squad on paper, SRH bounced back remarkably in 2024. They finished second in the league, making it all the way to the final.
The 2025 season saw a mid-table result for SRH, with six wins from fourteen matches, and playoff hopes dissolving relatively early.
SRH's crowning achievement remains their IPL championship victory in 2016. The team's journey under Kavya Maran's leadership has been a rollercoaster ride with both exhilarating highs and disappointing lows.
Beyond the IPL, Maran also oversees the Sunrisers Eastern Cape franchise in the SA20 league in South Africa. This team has enjoyed greater success, winning the first two seasons in 2023 and 2024 under the captaincy of Aiden Markram.
